Carly Speechley will take up the position in July, replacing current director of children’s services Melanie John-Ross, who is set to retire.

John-Ross, who has worked within local authority children's services for 32 years, took up the position in 2020 following the retirement of former president of the Association of Directors of Children’s Services Rachel Dickinson.

Speechley has been director of children and families in Sheffield since 2017.

She has previously held the positions of interim assistant director of children and young people in Kirklees and deputy director of children’s services in Manchester.
