Awards success for transformed playground

1 min read Education
A project to transform a derelict playground into a flower garden has earned a primary school in Enfield its second award of the year.

Pupils at Tottenhall Infant School will receive a London Children's Flower Society award for their efforts in creating the garden, from the Countess of Wessex at a ceremony at London Guildhall next week.

Also involved in the gardening project were arts group Art Start and recycling group Scrapp.

The garden, which this year involved a display of daffodils, had already won another award earlier this year, gaining silver in the best school grounds category in the Enfield in Bloom competition.

The school's head teacher Claire Clarke, said: "Our garden developed as a result of asking our six- and seven-year-olds and staff as part of a project about Healthy Lifestyles and recycling.

"They all agreed that we needed a garden to grow flowers, fruit and vegetables for the children to eat and we also put in compost bins to recycle our fruit and shredded paper."

A professional gardener visits the school each week to help the children and it now has four compost bins and is the focus of a gardening club run by the school.
