In an official response to the proposals, the association said that the government failed to properly emphasise the importance of personal, social and health education (PSHE) and social and emotional aspects of learning (SEAL).
The response said: "Where schools make sure that these underpin the rest of the curriculum, and where they are not seen as merely part of the curriculum, children and young people tend to be more engaged and make more progress."
The association also warned that the white paper does not address why schools should prioritise pupils' health and wellbeing.
"We are disappointed that the section on health and wellbeing fails to describe the relationship between health, wellbeing and attainment," the response said.
