Grants to fund urban youth activity and volunteering projects

What is it? Starbucks Youth Action is a global funding initiative from the coffee shop giant to promote local youth activities and volunteering. The UK fund is being run in partnership with UK Youth.

How much is on offer? Up to £2,000 is available for each project. The Youth Action programme is part of a £16.5m global corporate social responsibility budget. Around 60 youth projects received funding in the UK last year.

What will it fund? Funding is available for projects aimed at 16- to 24-year-olds in the UK and Ireland. Its focus is on urban areas and successful projects must operate in the following areas: Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Dublin, Edinburgh, Leeds, London and Manchester. Applicants will need to prove the project is unique to the community and to list issues it will address. Potential deal breakers such as gaining planning permission will need to be already in place.

Successful projects have included a cyberbullying initiative in Cardiff, a bee-keeping project in Manchester and a cheerleading scheme in Kensington. Cardiff-based Fairwater and Pentrebane Community Angling Club is among successful applicants after gaining funding for a project to take disadvantaged young people on angling trips. Another to win funding was the Skelton Grange Environment Centre in Leeds, where access ramps and handrails to improve access for visitors to the centre were needed.
