Work Wise: This is what I do - Mark Benson, National ParticipationDevelopment Manager NCH

1 min read
As national participation development manager, I oversee the strategic development of children and young people's participation across almost 500 NCH projects throughout the UK.

It's all about developing experiences that help young people to be listened to.

If you look at the history of NCH, it has always had participation as an ideal, right from 1869 when children were involved in building the first home. Today the practicalities are a bit different, but the philosophy is the same.

I started working with NCH in 2001 doing children's rights work and became involved in participation management of a project on Teesside for about two-and-a- half years. We previously had a participation officer, but the post has been made more strategic.

Time and again, children and young people say that the key element of good participation is simply 'fun'. It is imperative that they are given opportunities and are empowered to influence the systems that surround them. However, you have to engage them in the first place.
