I took up this role in November last year. It's a relatively new position in primary schools, although a lot of secondaries already have school business managers. The government is trying to introduce them to more schools as they can take some of the burden off the head teacher leaving them free to concentrate on the teaching and learning aspects of the school.
My previous job was a school bursar and this is significantly different. I was used to balancing the books, but the role of school business manager is much broader, taking in areas such as administration, health and safety, personnel, sustainability and marketing. As schools move to open for extended hours, it is a bigger role.
