As somebody with a keen interest in cycling and the outdoors I was drawn towards Sustrans and the work that it does. Although we don't provide safe cycling training - that's another body - we support these school champions with the information and knowledge needed to take a leading role in school travel plans and safe routes to schools initiatives. We also hold interactive workshops with children at schools and environment fairs to raise awareness of active travel to school.
The main challenges are trying to influence and change the mindset of people and their views on sustainable transport, and on the school journey in particular. I work with and help to support predominantly primary schools - so children up to the age of 11. However we also work with secondary schools, in particular, in the transition phase from one to the other to make sure children continue to travel by foot or bike when they go to a new school.
