Young people from Sunderland are gaining new skills and confidence from a hair and beauty programme co-ordinated by Hylton Red House School. The school has its own salon and offers 11- to 16-year-olds the chance to gain skills, accreditation and qualifications.
The programme has been running for five years having started as an after-school club. It now encompasses out-of-school learning, holiday programmes and work with other schools. Students gain a lot from taking part, says assistant head teacher Helen Elderkin. It has helped build positive relationships between pupils and teachers and enabled the school to reach out to parents and the local community.
