The Council for Learning Outside the Classroom believes that how and where we learn is as important as what we learn. Learning outside the classroom is an organised and powerful approach to learning which centres on direct experience.
Outdoor learning improves young people’s understanding, skills, values, personal and social development, and can increase capacity and motivation to learn. In 2006, the then Department for Education and Skills released a learning outside the classroom manifesto to encourage schools to move beyond the classroom towards more diverse learning sites.
Learning around the school site and field trips, along with residential trips and expeditions, all seek to provide outdoor learning experiences and help young people to achieve their potential. The provision of outdoor learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage became mandatory in 2007.
