Crime prevention and youth work have long gone hand in hand, even if there's reluctance among those working with young people to be viewed as 'soft policemen'. The reality is that a minority of young people do commit offences and far more - as many as one in three according to the latest Crime and Justice Survey - are the victims of crime.
Reassuringly, there's lots of information online to help deter young people from getting involved in criminal activity as well as provide support to young victims. One such website is Victim Support's www.are-you-ok.org.uk, which is a simple, text-based site that takes young people through how they might feel, what can be done and where they can find help if they've experienced or witnessed crimes such as theft, robbery or bullying. More detailed material is available on the main Victim Support site, which can be reached via a link on the are-you-ok site.
