Resources: Log on to... Mental health websites

3 mins read Health Youth Work
The teenage years can be challenging times for some young people and it's often then that mental health problems manifest themselves for the first time. Tim Burke tracks down the best websites offering support for young people and youth workers.

It's distressingly easy to come up with grim headline figures linked to mental health: one in 15 young people has self-harmed, or if a match at the new Wembley Stadium was full of young men aged 15 to 24, a year later 16 of them will have committed suicide. At a more mundane level, though, helping young people deal with the slings and arrows of adolescent life is youth workers' bread and butter. That includes encouraging them to recognise and talk about issues concerning their health and, where necessary, seek specialist help.

Online support for young people and youth workers seeking help or information is becoming much more sophisticated. In response, the young people's section of mental health charity Young Minds' website, www.youngminds.org.uk, now includes podcasts that can be downloaded and passed on to friends.
