Resources: Log on to ... the performing arts

3 mins read Youth Work
From Scout gang shows to enthusiastic youth club productions of Grease, staging a show can be a great way to engage and inspire young people. Tim Burke tracks down the websites that can help youth groups set up a performing arts project.

Music and theatre have a huge capacity to get young people working together: any kind of performance can provide a fun and sometimes a life-changing personal development experience. The whole idea has recently been given a boost with Disney's High School Musical films and, of course, the success of Andrew Lloyd Webber's series of auditions held on primetime TV.

Youth Music Theatre UK, founded in 2003, runs projects all over the UK for young people aged 11 to 21. Its website, www.youth-music-theatre.org.uk, has details of this summer's programme, including original productions devised with young people such as Missing Mel, which will be performed at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The site has details of how to audition for future events, and information about Youth Music Theatre's week-long studio sessions around the UK over the summer and outreach events held in partnership with local authorities and voluntary organisations.
