President pushing for change: Stuart Gallimore, ADCS president 2018/19

Neil Puffett speaks to Stuart Gallimore, ADCS president 2018/19.

Stuart Gallimore took over as president of the Association of Directors of Children's Services (ADCS) on 1 April, succeeding Alison Michalska. He has been director of children's services (DCS) in East Sussex since 2014, and a social worker for more than 30 years. He is also a trustee of charity Children on the Edge, which works to protect and restore the rights of children from fragmented communities in some African and Asian countries, including India, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Uganda.

How did you get involved in children's services?

I'm a social worker by profession and I quite literally fell into it, largely as a result of not reading the degree prospectus closely enough. When I arrived [for the course] on day one, I realised the significance of the "applied" in applied social science, as it involved a placement. Doing the placement scratched an itch - I found it really interesting, rewarding and challenging.
