Protector of children's services: Alison O'Sullivan, ADCS president

Neil Puffett meets Alison O'Sullivan, president of the ADCS.

Although when we meet it is more than a week before the general election campaign proper gets under way, it is clear that Alison O'Sullivan, the incoming president of the Association of Director's of Children's Services (ADCS), is mindful of the approaching moment.

Following the dissolution of parliament yesterday (30 March), the pre-election "purdah" period has officially begun, meaning civil servants must keep public statements to a minimum and take great care to avoid doing or saying anything that could be interpreted as helpful to the government or opposition parties.

Although the ADCS is not officially subject to the restrictions, unlike individual children's services leaders who are its members, O'Sullivan appears keen to abide by the spirit of the rules. While she talks at length on specific issues related to children's services, she's less forthcoming when it comes to giving views on the two main parties in terms of spending and policy relating to children and young people.
