Lorna Ward, Real nappy outreach worker, Dundee City Council

1 min read Early Years
After working with children and families for many years, I moved to Dundee two years ago to retire. Once here I decided I wanted a new challenge and as I have always been interested in green issues this role seemed ideal.

People call me the Dundee nappy lady and my job is to raise the profile of real nappies in Dundee and encourage parents to use them for all or some of the time. I talk to parent groups, hold nappy displays, go along to community events and hold regular "nappucino" coffee mornings. Behind the scenes I keep records on the number of parents using real nappies and stay in contact with the nappy network in Dundee and elsewhere.

Nearly eight million disposable nappies are thrown away in the UK every day, making up four per cent of landfill. Each baby will produce 150 bin bags of nappies each year and Dundee Council wants to reduce that amount. The recycling programme Increase funds our project until February 2008.
