
Every community centre had to put on two nights for young people so on my placement I supported the manager in setting that up. I talked to the young people who'd hang around on the cricket pitch outside the centre. They were more used to being chased off than coming inside.
AND YOU ENJOYED THAT?
Yes, and then I got a chance to work as a casual support worker to develop the youth work. After four years I became manager of the Yew Tree Centre and was then in a position to start looking for external funding to design more programmes. That made it easier for young people to pop in during the day to get one-to-one support. During this time I was also able to study for a JNC youth work qualification.
