I had been teaching French as a second language to three- to 11-year-olds. I was looking for a job with a charity that would make a difference and this came up.

Booked Up is a book gifting programme for year sevens funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families. It was launched last year and we have just heard that we have funding for another year.

Booked Up is all about encouraging reading for pleasure, as reading can begin to seem less cool as children go to secondary school. Each child can choose a book from a list of 12 titles.

Schools register for the programme and every child is sent a magazine with a list of what is available. Schools have organised swap schemes to let children read even more and have held discussions around the books. It's great to get feedback from the co-ordinators, such as librarians and teachers, to find out what the children have thought.
