
Shadow children's minister Tim Loughton claimed at the start of the year that local authority youth services "leave a lot to be desired" and that he sees no reason why they can't be delivered entirely by the voluntary sector.
Youth charity chief executive Adam Nichols, also in these pages, concurred, claiming that voluntary organisations are effectively "subsidising" local authorities through the good work they do.
But Wright, who this week takes over from Susie Roberts as chief executive of the Confederation of Heads of Young People's Services (Chyps), says: "We should try to steer away from divisive arguments over which sector is best. It doesn't add to the discussion and it doesn't benefit young people."
