Fiona Barlow, Postnatal group leader, National Childbirth Trust

1 min read Early Years
I first came into contact with National Childbirth Trust (NCT) when I had my own children 16 years ago. Iwas, and still am, an antenatal teacher, but I realised there was a need for continuing support for women after birth.

As NCT group leaders, we work self-employed, but are contracted to the organisation, which provides us with support and back-up. This also includes ongoing training and reviews, so you don't have a sense of working in isolation.

For postnatal women, we provide a framework where they can gain confidence in their own abilities as mothers. Women these days have reached saturation point in terms of the amount of information they have about motherhood. Although many come to us with how-to queries, our role is not to answer those questions. Instead, we give them the confidence to be happy that what they are doing is for the best, rather than what they have seen in the latest parenting TV programme.
