Policy into practice - Postnatal depression

1 min read Health
THE ISSUE: More than 70,000 women annually are diagnosed with postnatal depression in the UK. This means that one in 10 new mothers suffer with symptoms ranging from mild depression to suicidal thoughts.

A survey of 743 people, released in April by the Bounty Parenting Club, revealed nearly half of parents believe there should be more support available for sufferers of postnatal depression. Forty-five per cent of parents surveyed called for more trustworthy advice on the condition and possible treatment options. It can be a distressing and confusing time for mothers, who may feel guilty or unable to cope, and it is important they are able to access the right support to set them on track to having a healthy relationship with their babies. Children's centres and family services can play a vital role in ensuring the right support services are in place.
