Children's social workers spend 80% of their time on administrative tasks due to the sheer volume of data they manage. This includes case notes, forms, assessments, and uploaded images, all stored in disparate formats within the case management system.
The situation makes it hard to find information as it requires searching multiple sources while crucial insight may be missed as it is buried in casefiles over many years.
Recognising these problems, North Yorkshire Council developed a proof-of-concept project to reimagine case management using AI with Microsoft Azure.
The project, funded by the Department for Education's Data and Digital Solutions Fund, aimed to reduce social worker administrative burden, improve information retrieval by enabling advanced semantic search capabilities that can interrogate data within the existing case management system. It can also enhance decision-making with data insights by creating auto-generated eco-maps that visualise the networks and relationships surrounding children and families. It developed knowledge-sharing resources by creating comprehensive practice for other local authorities or organisations.
