Expert calls for national standards on use of AI in children's services

There needs to be national standards governing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by local authority children’s services, an expert in data science has said.

Speaking on the latest edition of the CYP Now Podcast, Sean Manzi, senior data specialist at Dartington Service Design Lab, warned the lack of any standards or regulations on the use of AI in children’s services meant local authorities were vulnerable to being taken advantage of by unscrupulous system’s providers.

“It's a bit like the Wild West, at the moment,” Manzi said. “Any company could say ‘my AI model will help you make a better decision’. But nobody can see inside that if it's not transparent, if it's not explainable. Where's the accountability?

“There's the potential for applications of AI to do harm if they are poor quality because they produce poor quality information, resulting in bad, or wrong, decisions.
