The role is varied. As well as presenting some course elements, I have to monitor the programme and its referrals. It is very new so there is a lot of awareness building with other agencies so they can refer families to us. I have found families prefer to have relationships with people they know and trust, as they are more likely to accept a referral from them.
I liaise with managers of other services to secure the help of parent group leaders, such as health visitors and nursery workers, to deliver the programme. The parent nurturing course covers 10 weeks and commits families to two hours a week. It offers a gradual build-up of information about parenting. The beauty of the course is that it nurtures adults, giving them skills and strategies that can benefit families for the rest of their lives, and that is incredibly fulfilling.
