General Election 2024: Investment in children and families must replace raft of reviews

The new government will have critical choices to make about spending priorities. Investing in children and young people should be top of the list.

We know that providing the right support at the right time and in the right place can be life-changing for children, yet growing levels of need mean this is increasingly rare.

Too often, children are at the back of the queue, particularly when it comes to central government-funded social care. Council budgets are at breaking point, the workforce are on their knees trying to cope with ever growing demand, and spending of precious funding has had to move away from early support to emergency responses.

Whatever choices the next government makes, the last thing our children and young people need is more reviews. As one young person at a meeting in parliament told politicians recently, “we’ve had enough words, we need action.”
