College students develop the confidence and skills to be at the forefront of greener future
Students who take part in the Environment Leaders Programme choose, plan and deliver projects on their own

Name: Environment Leaders Programme

Provider: Barnsley College

Summary: Sixth formers at a Yorkshire college have developed environmental projects to educate peers and the community on sustainability and build their green leadership skills in the process.

Recent research by the Leadership Skills Foundation found that 59% of young people want to learn more about climate change than they currently do. We’ve seen this echoed at Barnsley College, with many of our students voicing the desire to play an active part in tackling the climate crisis but feeling unequipped to do so.

That’s why we trialled the Environment Leaders Programme with our Sixth Form students last year. The programme was designed by the Leadership Skills Foundation in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund and Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and gave our students the opportunity to plan and deliver nature and environment projects. These projects had a positive impact on our college and the local community and allowed our students to develop essential skills like teamwork and resilience at the same time.
