A therapeutic-based community alternative to custody for young people on remand could offer a blueprint for reducing the number of children in the secure estate.

When the first setting opens later this year, the London Accommodation Pathfinder will provide accommodation units which can be accessed via court remands into local authority accommodation, or as part of a Youth Rehabilitation Order with a residence requirement, as an alternative to a custodial sentence.

Funded by the Youth Justice Board (YJB), the pathfinder involves several London councils, health agencies and voluntary organisations.

The partners hope that the accommodation will offer a more rehabilitation-focused living environment than a custodial setting. Each unit will provide a psychologically informed environment which works to promote the development of meaningful transformative relationships between young people and staff.
