
I initially qualified as a property lawyer, but in 2012 I decided to have a career change and went back to university to get a degree in science and become a science teacher. I worked in a mainstream secondary school and I preferred teaching the disaffected and disenfranchised young people, so I moved into alternative provision. I liked working in pupil referral units, so I took on a joint role at Everton Free School as head of science and special educational needs co-ordinator (Senco).
I’m from a white working class background who didn’t do very well at school – my dad was illiterate. Being from a very underprivileged part of Liverpool, education transformed my life. I wanted to play my part in giving young people equity of opportunity.
