Background

When Andrea Townsley took her first-born child to nursery, she looked around and thought: "This is not good enough - I can do better." A chemical engineer by profession, she has gone on to establish her own chain of nurseries. Clever Clogs Day Nursery in Belmont, Durham, is now in the 10 per cent of nurseries rated "outstanding" by Ofsted.

Action

Clever Clogs offers childcare for children under five and after-school provision for five- to 11-year-olds. It has 122 places per day and a total of 170 children on its books. All children have access to outdoor activities. Another unique selling point is the setting's flexibility, allowing parents to swap days and change pick-up times to suit their family's needs.
