Good Practice: How a cycle scheme is helping young offenders to give back

The Cycloan initiative has contributed to an overall reduction in crime and reoffending rates in Stockport

Project Cycloan

Funding From Stockport Council's youth offending service. The project was kick-started with money from the Youth Opportunity Fund and Youth Capital Fund, totalling £5,200. It now generates income through bike sales

Purpose To help young offenders pay back their debt to society at the same time as gaining useful skills

Background Stockport's Cycloan scheme was set up as part of wider efforts to reduce crime in the area by getting offenders involved in positive activities. The project gives young offenders aged 14 to 19 the opportunity to repair lost, stolen and broken bikes as part of community reparation or "payback". Once roadworthy again, the bikes are given to victims of cycle theft, others who need bikes or community groups.
