In the wake of a number of tragic terrorist attacks in the UK, tackling extremism remains at the forefront of the government agenda. However, a recent case in the High Court (A local authority v HB (Alleged Risk of Radicalisation and Abduction) [2017] EWHC 1437 (Fam)) has highlighted the challenges of safeguarding children and preventing radicalisation.
The case involved two children, aged six and three. Their father had left the UK in 2013 and was thought to have died in Syria. Care proceedings had been initiated by the local authority in August 2016 on the grounds that the children were at risk of radicalisation.
