Independent social care providers play a key role in children’s services. Many have been around for a long time and research shows the sector has reached a critical point in its maturity.

A Tristone Health survey of 200 independent social care providers working in children’s and adult services found nearly three quarters of people with significant control were over the age of 50 while 26 per cent were over the age of 60.

The average age of the people in charge was 54 – the oldest was 77. Companies had been running for 14 years on average with 70 per cent established more than 10 years ago.
