I am planning to retire as an assistant director next year. How can I make sure my successor continues with improvement?
Continuity of service is important. It is vital to have a good database of evidence of your successes.
As well as meeting with colleagues and reviewing progress, it is wise to consider challenges to ensure you do not become complacent. A group of managers from different agencies could be helpful in peer-reviewing the changes to ensure they are firmly established and valued by all agencies. It would also be helpful to visit key agencies, partners and projects with your successor, to demonstrate the value of the services.
Do establish a consensus as to what has been achieved, and ensure your successor is aware of it, but we all have to allow people to make their own mark. Enjoy the retirement and plan for that too.
