Northern Ireland needs greater investment in family support and prevention if it is to hit targets relating to children's health, wellbeing and educational attainment, according to umbrella group Children in Northern Ireland (CINI).

The Metropolitan Police says a man convicted last week of child indecency offences, who had given lectures on child pornography to its officers - and to staff of other agencies - had at "no stage" advised it on matters relating to child protection. Stephen King, 54, had also given advice to defence solicitors. He was jailed for gross indecency under a different name in 1989 but was able to commit further offences as the sex offenders register did not exist at that time.

So Gordon Brown is the "children's champion", as the Daycare Trust's director Stephen Burke put it following the Budget last week. The Chancellor announced an extra 669m for Sure Start and other early years provision, including 100,000 more childcare places and 700 more children's centres by 2008 to make a total of 1,700 targeted in the 20 per cent most deprived wards (see News, p4, Analysis, p11).
