So Gordon Brown is the "children's champion", as the Daycare Trust's director Stephen Burke put it following the Budget last week. The Chancellor announced an extra 669m for Sure Start and other early years provision, including 100,000 more childcare places and 700 more children's centres by 2008 to make a total of 1,700 targeted in the 20 per cent most deprived wards (see News, p4, Analysis, p11).
