Dismissal for so-called poor performance is a potentially fair reason irrespective of the business or organisation. Employers are free to design their own procedures and standards for performance management. In this context, government proposals can be seen as no more than an attempt to place schools on an equal footing with other employers.

It is worrying that girls feel unconfident and under pressure to drink alcohol to have a good time. Young people may think their peers are drinking more than they are, but this isn't the case - 55 per cent of 11- to 15-year-olds have never drunk alcohol and this percentage has gone up in recent years.

Attending the party conferences was a subdued and unreal experience - it appears the issue of child poverty has fallen off the political agenda. While the "squeezed middle" was the subject of much concern, families living on the lowest incomes rarely figured in debate.

I was pleased to see the article about the pilot programme of International Citizen Service (ICS) but feel the need to correct one observation. The article states that "the scheme has been a departure for these organisations, which are better versed in sending older professionals on longer-term placements".

I agree with Action for Children that children can only be 100 per cent safe when those in regular contact with them are checked. However, Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks alone aren't enough and must remain in place with additional measures used to prevent people falling through the net and abuse occurring.

As an organisation working with young offenders, the Transition to Adulthood Alliance (T2A) would join the call by Barnardo's for vulnerable young people leaving custody to receive proper housing support (cypnow.co.uk, 28 February).
