
The theme for this year’s UN International Youth Day is ‘Youth Engagement for Global Action’. And there is no doubt that global action is needed on many issues - but this year, with the Covid-19 pandemic, the perspective of and focus on young people is particularly important.
This has been an extraordinarily challenging year for all of us, but perhaps none more so than for our young people. Kept apart from friends, unable to celebrate finishing exams, employment prospects threatened, the usual summer holidays cancelled - life has been on hold.
Throughout the pandemic I’ve hosted and participated in many video calls with young people, including the Department for Culture, Media and Sport Youth Steering Group, discussing the issues they’re most concerned about, including education, mental health, employment opportunities and social and racial justice.
