Unison warns of fake careers advisers after Connexions cuts

1 min read Youth Work
Surrey Connexions services have noticed incidents of bogus careers advisers calling to request information since the council has cut staff, a trade union has claimed.

The callers have been asking for information on training programmes, college courses and finance to be sent to home addresses.

"We had one caller who said she was from Bracknell Connexions, but when we spoke to the branch, they told us no one with that name worked there," said Chris Leary, communications officer at Surrey County Unison.

"These people are using underhand tactics to get access to information by being dishonest. They’re trying to poach the work of professionals."

Unison is warning of the dangers of untrained advisers giving young people careers guidance.

"Members are noticing a trend in calls," said Leary. "But we don’t think these people are being directed by anyone — they’re just being opportunistic."
