CYP Now - UNCRC incorporation needed to protect children’s right to food, say young people

The Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) has called for the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) incorporation bill to be reconsidered by ministers, in a series of recommendations to
protect young people’s right to food amid the cost-of-living crisis.

The UNCRC bill, which was blocked by the UK government in a legal challenge shortly after being passed by Scottish ministers in 2021, seeks to embed the rights of children as outlined in the UNCRC into Scotish law, making them legally binding.

At present, the Scottish and UK governments are understood to be in talks around amendments to the bill, so it can be brought back to the Scottish parliament for reconsideration.

SYP, which represents young people in Scotland aged 12 to 25, has urged ministers to bring the bill back to parliament swiftly and commit to immediate commencement once it has passed, in its new report on children’s right to food.
