A senior judge has said fatal stabbings are now out of control.
Justice Paul Carney, a judge at London's central criminal court, said cases coming in had doubled "overnight" and were expected to increase.
So far this year, 19 young people have been stabbed to death in London.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has insisted the government will take any measures needed to cut down on knife crime.
Brown said: "We want to make it completely unacceptable for any teenager in particular to carry a knife."
But Carney said: ""Fatal stabbings are now in fact out of control."
