The government proposals, announced in the summer, involve reducing existing staff:child ratios from 1:4 to 1:5 for two-year-olds, with the intention of lowering costs for parents amid the cost-of-living crisis.

The petition, which reached 100,000 signatures late last week, was launched by Zoe and Lewis Steeper. It condemns the government’s proposal, saying it is “potentially endangering children in trusted care”.

Under parliamentary rules, petitions that reach the threshold of 100,00 signatures will be considered for debate. A response is expected within a week.

Neil Leitch, chief executive of the Early Years Alliance, said of the success of the petition "clearly shows how worried both providers and parents are about the likely impact of proposed ratios changes on the early years sector in England”.
