The petition was launched shortly after the government announced plans to change staff:child ratios for two-year-olds at childcare settings in England from 1:4 to 1:5, in a bid to cut costs for parents.

The proposals were met with criticism across the sector, with providers warning the move could be “catastrophic” for children's welfare.

The petition, which states that relaxing ratios risks is “potentially endangering children in trusted care”, reached 100,000 signatures in a matter of days, crossing the threshold necessary to trigger a parliamentary debate.

The government has now confirmed that the petition will be debated in parliament on 14 November.
