National Education Union urges next government to tackle child poverty

In a campaign called Value Education, Vote for Education, the NEU has set out key areas for educational reform which an incoming government should tackle.

The next government must “give our children the education they deserve”, it says.

In its apolitical manifesto, the teaching union has called for an end to child poverty. This includes the removal of the two-child benefit cap, which currently prevents parents from claiming tax credit or universal credit for more than two children.

Child poverty experts report that removing the two-child cap could lift 250,000 children out of poverty. Both the Conservative and Labour parties have said that they would not remove the cap if elected.
