In a speech at the Social Market foundation today secretary of state for work and pensions James Purnell reiterated the Government’s commitment to halving UK child poverty within two years.
But Barnardo’s chief executive Martin Narey, who is also chairman of the Campaign to End Child Poverty, said: “We remain concerned that reality won't match the rhetoric.” He added the March Budget was an ideal opportunity for actions to speak louder than words.
Narey conceded that since 1997 the Government has made good initial progress in reducing child poverty but said: “Most recent figures show that progress has stalled and may even have reversed slightly.”
