Michelle Donelan replaces Zahawi as Education Secretary

Michelle Donelan has been appointed as the new Education Secretary in the Prime Minister’s emergency reshuffle following the resignations of a number of cabinet members in response to the Chris Pincher affair.

Donelan, Conservative MP for Chippenham since 2015, replaces Nadhim Zahawi after he was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer following Rishi Sunak’s resignation on Tuesday evening.

She had been minister of state for higher and further education since September 2021 and prior to that was minister for universities at the Department for Education. She was a government whip from July 2019 to February 2020.

Zahawi’s tenure as Education Secretary lasted less than 10 months.

Steve Barclay, MP for North East Cambridge and former Downing Street Chief of Staff, has become the new Health Secretary following Sajid Javed’s resignation.

Javed and Sunak resigned over the Prime Minister Boris Johnson's handling of allegations against Chris Pincher MP, who resigned as deputy chief government whip last week.
