
Recent government figures suggest that Lambeth, in south London, will see a 14.3% drop in pupils numbers by 2026/27 compared with figures seen a decade earlier.
The council cites Brexit, the cost-of-living crisis and the school funding system as reasons why less children are starting school in Lambeth and across the capital.
Its solution so far has been to work in partnership with local schools to reduce admission numbers as equally as possible, with 975 places already removed between 2016 and 2025.
However, with nearly 539 vacant places in reception classes and not all schools reducing admission numbers, Lambeth has launched a consultation with the public to garner resident’s views on “protecting high-quality education now and into the future”.
