Guides deliver anti-airbrushing petition to Downing Street

1 min read Youth Work
Girlguiding UK has delivered a petition carrying 25,000 signatures to 10 Downing Street urging government to introduce compulsory labelling for airbrushed images.

The organisation is calling for airbrushed images to be distinguished from "natural" images, saying such a move would help to "shape a generation of self-confident girls and young women".

Launched in August, the petition followed Girlguiding UK’s Girls Attitude Survey, which revealed that 50 per cent of 16- to 21-year-old girls would consider having surgery to change the way they look.

Gemma Hallatt, an 18-year-old Girlguiding UK Advocate said: "We each know from our own experience that the airbrushed images you see in magazines and on advertising boards can really affect the self confidence of girls and young women. "Most of us have no idea how significantly these pictures are altered and are shocked when they realise that the images they have of celebrities and models are not a reality."
