Winners of the Children & Young People Now Awards 2019 were revealed during an evening of high celebration for the sector.
Female empowerment organisation Getaway Girls were among the big winners of the night, scooping two prizes; the Youth Work Award and the Children and Young People’s Charity Award for their work teaching young women to build their confidence and develop new skills.
Cafcass also took home two prizes for its Positive Co-parenting Programme; The Safeguarding Award and the Family Justice Award.
Create (Arts) inspired:arts project won the Young Carers Award while Children’s Society’s Rise Project took the top spot for the Advice and Guidance Award.
Mac Ferrari, founder of anti-knife crime initiative Bikestormz was named as Children and Young People’s Champion.
Other winners included the Fostering Network which won the Family Support Award for its Step Up Step Down project; the London Borough of Havering which won the Care Leavers Award for its support hub the Cocoon and the NSPCC which won the Recruitment and Professional Development Award for its poverty, children and families training.
In his opening address, Derren Hayes, editor of CYP Now, told the audience: “This month has seen the 30th anniversaries of the Children Act 1989 and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
“The Convention has 54 articles setting out the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights that all children are entitled to. Article 12 includes a child’s right to be heard and it is a great testament to the sector that many of the projects celebrated tonight have been shaped by the views of children and young people and – in some cases – have empowered them to become active participants in delivering services.
“You don’t need me to tell you that the funding situation in children’s services is pretty dire – nine out of 10 children’s services budgets were overspent last year. The new government will need to invest to avoid further cuts.
"I’m not talking about a one-off pot of a few hundred million. It needs a long-term, sustainable, funding package that enables leaders to invest more in early help so that support can be provided before intensive intervention is needed. What better way to mark the 30th anniversary of the Children Act than to reignite its focus on providing preventative support for families.”
Children's TV presenter and “godfather of gunge” Dave Benson Phillips hosted the event while Alan Dedicoat, voice of Strictly Come Dancing, was on hand to announce the finalists.
Entertainment during the ceremony at the Hurlingham Club in Fulham, west London was provided by a young band the Sick Year Sixes from Hawthorns Primary School in Wokingham.
