Government lobbied to close schools
A petition launched by the National Education Union calling on the government to close schools during November as England goes into lockdown has amassed 150,000 signatures in just 48 hours.
In addition, more than 20,000 teachers and school support staff have written to their MP and lobbied them on social media since Sunday afternoon, the union has said.
Burberry backs Marcus Rashford’s anti-poverty campaign
Fashion house Burberry has announced plans to fund youth work projects in London and New York following a high-profile campaign by footballer Marcus Rashford to end food poverty.
Two north London youth clubs, Norbrook Youth Club and Woodhouse Park Lifestyle Centre, which Rashford attended as a child, will receive funding alongside 13 others selected by Burberry and London Youth.
London Youth will use the money for meals and support children with school work, while Norbrook will be improving their outdoor space.
Burberry will also provide support for arts-after-school non-profit Wide Rainbow in New York and the International Youth Foundation, which works with community leaders and young people across the world.
Babies and young children exempt from lockdown meeting rule
Children under school age will be exempt from new lockdown rules stating people may only meet one person from another household alone.
Announcing the change on Twitter, health minister Nadine Dorries said: "Children under school age who are with their parents will not count towards the limit on two people meeting outside.
"This will mean that a parent can see a friend or family member with their baby or young children.
"Children and adults who are dependent on round-the-clock care, such as those with severe disabilities, will also be included.
"The guidance will be updated to reflect this."
Campaigners praised the move for recognising loneliness affecting new parents.
