The government has pledged to reduce the proportion of overweight and obese children to the same level as in the year 2000 by 2020.
The Children’s Plan says more detail on ministers plans to tackle the problem will be contained in a national action plan on obesity to be published in early 2008.
The plan also says further proposals to improve children’s health will be published next year by the Department of Health and announces an independent review of England’s child and adolescent mental health services.
An action plan to reduce inequalities in infant mortality will also be published next year.
