The Local Connections Fund has been launched to tackle the rise in loneliness caused by social isolation in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that 2.6m adults in the UK experienced chronic loneliness, feeling lonely “often” or “always” between April and May 2020. A third of respondents reported feeling lonely in the past seven days, and felt this was impacting their general wellbeing.

The fund is made up of £2m from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and £2m from The National Lottery Community Fund (NLCF), and will champion local organisations like book clubs, walking groups and other community projects, which will be able to apply for the funding.
